Relief!! It feels great!

Last night I was attempting to figure out how children pages work, which isn’t all that difficult, but one thing that bugged me was how the link on the title worked. It takes the user to the web site home page, not the blog home page. Being a very smart guy I changed the URL to include “wordpress/index.php”…. oh oh… big mistake. I totally locked up the blog. All I could get was a funky page with no formatting, which wasn’t so bad, except when I tried to log on I kept getting an error that insisted on informing me “cookies must enabled”… well they are, as they have been since starting with WordPress more than a year ago…. I tried to relax the security settings, no luck. I tried a different computer, no luck. I tried Firefox, no luck. Midnight approached and then passed – I gave up. One lesson I HAVE tried to learn… when in a tough spot and you get tired as well as frustrated bad things can happen… real bad. Today I tried a few more things with the same negative results. Right after I upgraded WP to 2.3.1 I ftp’ed all the files from the server back to my hd “just in case”. I moved those back to the server… no luck. I was about to log onto the server, drop all the PHP files and restore them from a recent backup… which runs nightly…. after the last mishap… which was “oops #2,461”. Since that operation always has the potential to go south and make a bigger mess I logged onto the WordPress Org support forum and posted my problem.

Amazing, but within two minutes I had a response (along with a scolding….)

Amazing, but within two minutes I had a response (along with a scolding….) I was pointed to “www.village-idiot.org” web site.
Here they have a small utility appropriately, it’s called WordPress Emergency URL Changer Thing.

I read the directions, downloaded the small php file, edited it per instruction, dl’ed it to the server, logged on, changed the errant URL, logged off, logged on and here I am! I think from the time I opened the post in the forum to the time I closed it out it was a total of 16 minutes.

Fantastic. I can sleep tonight!

This is to cool – or is it?

I just found out about a new plugin for WordPress which integrates Jalbum directly into a WP blog entry.
I needed a post to try it out, so here it is. Let see if it works!
Okay, test one failed… getting errors in path.
Okay, test two failed… getting errors in path.
Okay, test three worked, I think the only issue was the direction of the slash!

But, putting the entire album in means every thumbnail is in the post! Way to many!!

Using the option for showing only 4 thumbnails.

I am going to try single photo….
. . . . some time later . . . I was reading the authors website . . . I am supposed to be able to limit the number of thumbnails . . . . somehow . . .
That works really great, even shows how many photos are in total album. Only issue I have is that the thumbnails are getting pretty grainy when I move them up to 300 pixels, which is the size I normally like them. Moved them back to 150.

Now that works sweet!
I like that I can see the thumbnail, then it opens the actual album. Other than tracking down the correct album and photo name it is easier than the LightBox Plus plug in I was using… which I still like to quickly show a thumbnail and then a full size photo, which can be the same or different photo which is nice.

Now . . . . I wonder what the IFrame option does . . .
Okay . . okay, but not my preference. It does allow the full album to be inserted, and maybe with a different theme, like one that resizes, it may work better, but I don’t like all the scrolling this way. I like opening the album from the thumbnail, then the new album can be close so the user returns to the blog entry.

Until the final plug in blows up,

A quick but nice visit.

Seems to be the summer to visit with family! After the wedding in Toronto where we caught up with most of the family, we just had a visit from sister Mary and her son. They came to visit our current home for the first time on their way from Pennsylvania to Chicago.

A selection of Korean delicacies.
Some pictures of a recent food fest! We went out for dinner to the Seoul Palace in Ann Arbor. The food was really good, and since I didn’t drive, tried a few of the Korean beers! In the pop up picture, I do believe the person in the corner is doing more “what the heck is that” than “this is….”.

That is one tasty looking sushi/sashimi combination plate!
I am not sure if all this is a welcome thing… all the sisters and brothers children are grown, graduating from high school or college, and even getting married. Does make one realize that time keeps moving on, slowing for no one, or no thing… My cane please,
George

Detroit Michigan – AutoRama Car Show

The Detroit AutoRama is not just a car show. It has just about any vehicle that can be customized – customized and on display here!
Tow Mater from the movie Cars. The stars of this one included a number of “Ridler” competition entries. A super prestigeous ultra custom car competition. Stars Tow Mater
Lightening McQueen from the movie Cars.and Lightening McQueen from the movie Cars were on hand also.

Chrome on cars, chromers selling chroming services, chrome polishers selling chrome polish. Even Polish sausage sandwiches. There was also enough chrome to satisfy the most bling-bling crazed rap star, not to mention 30 inch rims – a cool 30 G’s for a set of four – if you had a vehicle they would fit! See the entire photo collection when you have some spare time. I should look up to see how many acres Cobo Hall covers, but when you are walking, up an aisle, back down, up again, down again… and so on, THEN you head downstairs yet! Totally done in for the day, we were just going to do a quick pass through the lower level, until we found they hide the “beaters” downstairs. These guys were there for the fun of the show, not the prestige, popping open the trunk of the car to pull out another Bud, and another and …. The street racers AKA “The Fast and the Ticketed” are downstairs, so it draws a younger crowd… the fact the bikini contest is held in the same area does not hurt the drawing power at all!

the fact the bikini contest is held in the same area does not hurt the drawing power at all!

Speaking of drawing power “Mysterio” from the WWE was signing autographs, not that I had ever heard of him before, but there were literally Hundreds of people waiting in line to have a short stocky wrestler sign anything they could. Amazing, since the back of the line must have been several hours…. and a good chance he would finish for the day before they even got there.

One of the more unconvential choppers, check out all the others in the photo album. There were a lot of custom choppers on display, the width of the rear tires is remarkable. The surprise of the show for me was an entire section of customized bicycles and tricycles. It was obvious many were done by younger designers, but still I did not realize the extent to which people modified these. (Note I did not say it was my favorite part of the show, only a surprise.)

Well, until the final Mustang is chopped, channeled, shortened, bobbed and lowered,

Oh Crud!!

If you have a blog, and want to feel really bad, DON’T do backup’s of it. Wait for the server to crash, corrupt everything, THEN think about if or when you last did a back up!
I lost about two months worth of posts including Denver, Mexico, California and the Czech Republic!
I had updated the WordPress blog here at Kazology a little over a week ago while I was in Denver Colorado. Everything was fine, checked it a couple days later and notices I got a error. Thought it would reset… guess not. Replaced the actual program files with copies I have, still no go, but did improve enough to allow me to log on, which I could not do before. Once I did that I found all the posts were gone. Restored the last back up I did in September… ouch.
I don’t know about other blogs, but if you are not backing up the actual SQL files on your host server you may be sorry some day.

I know my new backup plan is to create a backup after every post from now on! It only takes about two minutes, and is set up to email the file to another account for safe keeping.

Until the last backup is created and restored,
George

RSS Feed Available

A new feature, RSS, has been added to Kazology. If you have a reader such as Pluck*, Atom, or one of many others, you can now add Kazology as one of your feeds. I would be the first to admit there probably will not be a lot of updates, ’cause there isn’t all that much going on, but when there is you will be amoung the first to know!

*Pluck works inside of Internet Explorer and is what I use. I found that Pluck was shut down in 2006. Way past time to move on to a new reader, but I don’t think they are used much anymore.
