Optimistic or Realistic – time will tell.

If you have been reading the Kazology posts all along, especially those on some of the trips, you will know I have made comments about being out of shape. For example when I visited Canadas Jasper and Elk Island Parks. I had pretty much the same reactions in Yosemite and Sequoia parks. Feeling really out of shape after these experiences – you know the 82 year old that blew by me hiking in Jasper . . . I started to get a little more exercise. When it seemed like I may stick with it more than two days, I bought a pedometer. As many newer technological devices this one downloads into software on the PC. So I am pretty confident when I say since August 2007 I have logged over 600 miles walking and jogging.  (I do not count regular walking in this, only “exercise” time. ) I could go on about all the aches and pains I went through getting started, but that isn’t why I was writing this. After six months of pretty regular workouts I am thinking about trying a 5K race in March 2008. Ann Arbor has a “Shamrocks and Shenanigans” 5K that may be the inaugural Kazology sponsored race (or leisurely stroll . . . time will tell.)

Until the final blister heals,

Signature Test Post

Will this really add my new signature, or did I screw up the code?

Well, whadda ya know? It looks like it works the first time in the preview window!
How personal is this little touch.

Relief!! It feels great!

Last night I was attempting to figure out how children pages work, which isn’t all that difficult, but one thing that bugged me was how the link on the title worked. It takes the user to the web site home page, not the blog home page. Being a very smart guy I changed the URL to include “wordpress/index.php”…. oh oh… big mistake. I totally locked up the blog. All I could get was a funky page with no formatting, which wasn’t so bad, except when I tried to log on I kept getting an error that insisted on informing me “cookies must enabled”… well they are, as they have been since starting with WordPress more than a year ago…. I tried to relax the security settings, no luck. I tried a different computer, no luck. I tried Firefox, no luck. Midnight approached and then passed – I gave up. One lesson I HAVE tried to learn… when in a tough spot and you get tired as well as frustrated bad things can happen… real bad. Today I tried a few more things with the same negative results. Right after I upgraded WP to 2.3.1 I ftp’ed all the files from the server back to my hd “just in case”. I moved those back to the server… no luck. I was about to log onto the server, drop all the PHP files and restore them from a recent backup… which runs nightly…. after the last mishap… which was “oops #2,461”. Since that operation always has the potential to go south and make a bigger mess I logged onto the WordPress Org support forum and posted my problem.

Amazing, but within two minutes I had a response (along with a scolding….)

Amazing, but within two minutes I had a response (along with a scolding….) I was pointed to “www.village-idiot.org” web site.
Here they have a small utility appropriately, it’s called WordPress Emergency URL Changer Thing.

I read the directions, downloaded the small php file, edited it per instruction, dl’ed it to the server, logged on, changed the errant URL, logged off, logged on and here I am! I think from the time I opened the post in the forum to the time I closed it out it was a total of 16 minutes.

Fantastic. I can sleep tonight!

The race that almost was, was, but was delayed two times.

August 19th., 2007 we made the annual outing to the running of the GFS Gordon Food Servi 3M 400 at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn Michigan. We made it there, but the drivers did not! Well, actually they were there, but a single car never made it to the track all day. Rain – rain – rain. Unending rain. We still had a good time, walked the lot viewing the merchandise that was available from all the drivers, the racetrack, the Army, Navy and Marines and so on. Our total purchases equaled the number of laps they ran that day = 0. Oh wait, I did get a badge holder so I could put the ticket in it so as not to get it soaked in my pants!
A break for Italian sausage sandwich and up to the stands for the start of the race! Well, they were sort of racing the jet drier trucks that were doing a great job of getting the track dry – really! The surface of the track was turning that light gray which indicates the moisture was out of the asphalt, and they even started announcing the drivers and awarding the checks to them from last weeks race. Then the rain started up again. The trucks made a few more laps, then gave it up as a lost cause – which it was. I think the drivers, crews and the MIS managment knew something they were not telling us since normally by the time they do the driver intro’s the car’s are on pit road getting prepped and ready to go. This time the tool boxs were not even uncovered let alone bringing the cars out to the track. About 3:30 we took a look at the skies and the time of day and decided they were not going to run at all on Sunday, so we packed up and took off. On the way home we heard they had called the race shortly after we left the track. In retrospect I am really glad we left when we did…. the parking area is totally grass – which was already getting pretty well mushed up after a week of rain and thousands of cars coming into the parking area. It must have gotten really bad later on. This was backed up by a letter which came a week later from the track thanking all the fans. It also noted there would need to be some improvements to the parking areas!! No doubt!. The race was supposed to be help Monday at 1, which was also cancelled, which was the first time in many years it was cancelled two days in a row. It was then rescheduled for Tuesday at 10 am…. this time it did run. 24 was leading until close to the end when he got taken out…. oh well, still leading in the points race and is a lock for the final 10 spots.

Until they put a roof over MIS,

NASCAR Day – well not officially

Today was sort of a NASCAR day all around here. Started off receiving the tickets for this years race at in Brooklyn Michigan.

Tickets are in hand for the race, now I just need to keep track of them until August.

Last night #24 tied Earnharts records for wins, maintained the points lead, as well as won at Phoenix where he has not won before. If you stayed up to watch it was a pretty good race at the end. Jeff and Tony doing a little grinding around the track to keep the interest up.

Now just waiting for August to roll around. (Update when I was fixing some broken links 12/22/2012) Jeff Gordon #24 ended up second in the point standings for the year, beat out by his own car and driver #48 Jimmy Johnson!)
